Tales of a Writer in a Hotel Room – Musings of a Nightowl
I am going to keep it short today. I have a good amount of work to do, including a couple of much delayed items.
I find that I’m not a morning person. Even when I get up in the morning, I don’t feel awake enough to do much of anything until after 12. Not sure why this is. Is it because I’ve worked mostly graveyard and late night shifts my whole life? Could be, but I also was this way as a kid. Just ask any of my relatives, I’ve never been a morning person. Maybe it is how I was raised.
I remember staying up as late as I could as a child. When other children had bedtimes of 7 or 8, my brother and I routinely went to bed around 10 or 11. Part of this is because my mom often worked late, but also because the various babysitters we had wouldn’t enforce any strict ‘bed’ time. I often would sleep for six or so hours before getting up and going to school. That was normal for my childhood.
I’ve tried changing to a ‘normal’ schedule over the years but it never seems to stick. Ah well, I just need to learn to stop fighting and learn to love my nocturnal nature.
Until next time, dream good dreams.

I’ve found that it’s pretty hard for me to go to bed before midnight, and on average I stay up until 1:00 AM (on the early side) to 3:00 AM. I try to make 3:00 the cut-off for staying up late, but it doesn’t always work. If I need to get up early, like if I have drill or something the next day, it takes a day or two of conditioning to get myself to go to bed at a decent hour that night, but more often than not I just end up staying up until my usual time, getting up early, being tired, and maybe getting more sleep the next night.
I think everyone is just different.
I’ve known people that can get by with 3 or 4 hours of sleep with no problem and others that needed 9-10 hours every night. It just depends on your body chemistry as well as what you have conditioned yourself to.

I’ve been getting up between 8 and 9 lately, but not going to bed until 12 or 1. It’s not as late as I used to stay up. Things are stabilizing, hopefully…

Good to hear! That actually seems like a pretty reasonable schedule. Even going to bed by 2:00 and getting up at 9:00 or 10:00 AM would be decent. Much later than that and it feels like most of the day is gone when you get up, LOL.

Yup. It doesn’t help when darkness falls around 5 pm. I am not a fan of that part of winter up here, by the way…
